Gods like to play as Cupid

Description

“The gods like to play at cupid, sometimes, but god, immortality and boredom make a terrible mix and gods after amusement make terrible matchmakers. cruelty comes easy, you know, when nothing seems real or important or lasting except your own endless infinity but sometimes they are kind. sometimes, they will put your love right next to you– your next door neighbor, your best friend, your roommate’s brother– and let you be with no great troubles, no grand tragedy. i think they like to see just how little it takes to satisfy humans. but well, those are rare, as you know too well. sometimes they put soulmates on the opposite ends of earth, just to see if the world can somehow bring you together. they like to place bets on when you’ll find each other, or whether your eyes will ever meet at all. it’s like a dice game with the world as their playing board: cast the die, flip the cards, and watch what happens. other times, they’ll leave soulmates on the opposite ends not of the earth or an ocean or a river but of a war, a feud, a contested border and laugh as you fall in love with that which must destroy you. or they’ll give you the greatest glories: a spotlight of sunshine, a galaxy in your name and take it away at its moment of promise like a rose cut off at the stem and abandoned just as it begins to blossom open. I think it amuses them to build up what they mean crumble like sandcastles in flood tide. and sometimes, sometimes, they will let you meet your love for just a while just long enough to know happiness, to taste love and then tear you apart and leave you to crumble. they’ll bring you close, just for the fun of it, to see how close you can get.
